Tanks are a key component of ground forces and, despite their robust construction, they are undergoing gradual upgrades to withstand the conditions of the contemporary battlefield. While the chassis or armour itself can last for decades, the communication equipment becomes technologically obsolete much more quickly. That is why it is necessary to equip older vehicles with modern systems that increase their efficiency, safety, and allow full integration of the technologies used by today’s armies.

Reliable communication on the battlefield is essential for the success of every operation. The modernization of the communication equipment of the tanks therefore provides a comprehensive tactical radio system that connects the crew members with each other, ensures communication with other vehicles, and allows contact with the superior command through modern radios.

Crucial element of internal communication is the intercom

The tank crew usually consists of a commander, gunner, loader, and driver – each of whom needs reliable communication even in extremely noisy environments. The central role is therefore played by the central communication unit (CCU), primarily designed for commanders, which functions as the main control element of the entire intercom. The CCU ensures voice distribution, connection with the tactical radio system, and management of communication priorities.

The CCU is connected to basic communication units (BCUs) designed for other crew members. These units provide each user with access to internal communications as well as to the vehicle radios, thus constituting an essential element of the tank’s communication architecture.

An important part of the system is also the Audio & Data Interface (ADI). This module processes signals from the BMS (Battle Management System) and transmits warning messages – for example, about fuel shortage, weapon system error states, ammunition depletion, or tank designation by an anti-tank missile laser. Just like the BCU, the ADI also allows connection of up to two headsets with access to the internal network and to the vehicle radios.

Connection with command and other vehicles

An integral part of the modernization is also external communication through radio systems. We offer proven radios RF2350 and RF4050, and can arrange integration with other types according to customer requirements. This allows the modernised tank to be connected not only with its own unit’s vehicles but also with superior command or allied forces. The entire solution is designed to be resistant to interference, support secure transmission of voice and data, and maintain compatibility with the vehicle’s communication system.

Communication challenges in the tank turret

Ensuring reliable connection in the turret is technically very demanding. The turret must rotate 360°, which makes the use of conventional cabling impossible – it would become tangled and quickly damaged during rotation. The space inside the turret is also considerably limited, filled with weapon systems and targeting equipment, and communication is further complicated by extreme noise during firing and movement.

Installation of a slip ring solves this problem – it allows continuous and safe transmission of signals between the turret and the hull. In conjunction with the RCU unit for the gunner, it ensures continuity of connection and ergonomic control in the crew’s working space.

Wide range of accessories

The modernisation is complemented by a rich range of accessories and headsets. Tank crews most commonly use a liner – a textile headset adapted to the confined space of the turret, which also protects the crew from impacts. These headsets are equipped with ANR (Active Noise Reduction) functions, specially adapted to the conditions of heavy military vehicles, and TT (Talk-Through) for monitoring. There is also a version with a throat microphone that captures vocal cord vibrations instead of surrounding sounds – an ideal solution for environments with extreme noise levels.

Flexibility and practical experience

A great advantage of the system is its modularity and the ability to adapt to a specific platform. Modernization can be carried out not only on T-72 tanks but also on other models, such as the T-54 or American M60. Thanks to the extensive experience of our technicians with installations in various types of military vehicles, we are able to offer solutions that precisely meet the needs of a specific project.

On today’s battlefields, the performance of a main battle tank (MBT) is no longer determined solely by armour, firepower, or manoeuvrability. Equally important is the ability for effective communication. Modern operations require rapid information transfer, precise command, and reliable connectivity with allies. A tank without a modern tactical communication system can easily lose contact with its surroundings and lose a key tactical advantage. Practical experience thus confirms that the combination of a high-quality intercom system, modern radios, and headsets with active hearing protection significantly simplifies the crew’s work and increases both efficiency and safety during combat deployment.
